Martin Compston plays down Celtic 'glory hunter' jibes as he points to Hoops love affair that started out a 'mess'

Martin Compston says he is no Celtic glory hunter - as Ange Postecoglou has him revelling in the good times that are a far contrast from when he started supporting the club.

The Line of Duty star grew up in the 90s during a time of Rangers' nine-in-a-row dominance but since the turn of the millennium, it has been joyous times for the Parkhead side. A 2-0 win over Hearts last Sunday sealed an 11th Premiership title in 12 years, while they have won 10 Scottish Cups, 11 League Cups and five trebles since 2000.

Postecoglou's high-tempo style is a joy to watch for the Scottish actor, who tells The Celtic View he loves where the club is at because of where it's been. Compston said: “People always say about being a glory hunter, but you’re born into Celtic - you don’t have any other option. When I was my nephew’s age, it was not a happy time to be a Celtic fan growing up.

“I think that’s why we appreciate where we are as a club at the moment because when I was eight the club was a mess. We have a real appreciation for how far we’ve come.

“The most memorable seasons of my life were under Tommy Burns as manager where it’s, ‘you’ll score three but we’ll score four’. We’ve had some great teams since then but this team under Ange seems special.

“He’s endeared himself to the support and it’s also the way he carries himself as a person. The players also seem to have bought into the club and the history and there’s a real connection with the fanbase.

“When you become used to success with how dominant we’ve been, to keep the punters entertained you do have to play with a bit of flair. It’s an amazing style to watch and teams do sit so deep against us which can be turgid, but that’s not the case with this team.
