Married couples could get hundreds of pounds a year with 'untapped' tax allowance

Married couples all across the UK could be getting a few extra hundred pounds in their pocket by taking advantage of one tax allowance.

Marriage Allowance is currently claimed by more than 2 million couples across the country, however, thousands more could be missing out without even knowing. Some may even wrongly believe that they're not eligible for the allowance so they don't bother checking, such as couples where one partner has either retired or stopped working to care for someone.

This tax allowance could help couples save hundreds of pounds a year. This is due to the fact that most people have a Personal Allowance of £12,750 - money they don't need to pay tax on - but Marriage Allowance lets the lower-earning person in a couple transfer £1,260 of the Personal Allowance to their spouse or civil partner.
