Mario Gotze admits regret over rejecting Liverpool after holding Jurgen Klopp talks

Former Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mario Gotze has admitted he made the “wrong decision” when he snubbed interest from Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool.

The now PSV Eindhoven playmaker was subjected to interest from his former manager in 2016, when he parted ways with Bayern. Klopp appeared to very interested in reuniting with the midfielder he helped develop into one of the world’s best.

However, Gotze decided to remain in the Bundesliga where he eventually returned to his former side Dortmund in a deal worth £21.7million. But Gotze revealed he would have made a very different decision if he was able to go back to the moment Klopp and Liverpool demonstrated their keenness in signing the midfield ace.

“We are still in touch and we spoke back then about me coming to Liverpool,” Gotze revealed in an interview with the Daily Ma il. “But I wasn’t in a state of mind where I could consider it, that’s why it didn’t happen.

“Do I regret it? It’s always difficult to look back but if you ask me now then yeah, I should have joined Liverpool for sure. I just made a wrong decision but it’s not a regret.”

Gotze is now playing under Roger Schmidt at Dutch giants PSV. He has enjoyed a very impressive second campaign at the Eredivise side, contributing 11 goals and 10 assists in all competitions for PSV.

But while he has certainly been a creative and industrious presence in the PSV side, there was a time when he was considered to be one of the best young midfielders in world football. He emerged onto the scene under Klopp’s guidance, as a dynamic attacking midfielder at the heart of Dortmund.

He was one of Klopp’s most important players when they followed up their 2011 Bundesliga triumph with a League and Cup double
