Michael Owen makes Jurgen Klopp Man United claim as he aims dig at Erik ten Hag

Michael Owen has claimed that Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp could turn Manchester United around in 'two to three years'.

The former United and Liverpool striker was speaking after the announcement was made that Erik ten Hag would become the next manager at Old Trafford. Ten Hag will be arriving at the Theatre of Dreams at the end of the season and joins from Ajax until 2025.

United have the option of extending his contract by a further year should they wish to. Despite his success in the Netherlands, Owen told The Kelly & Wrighty Show on Optus Sport that he was left underwhelmed by the appointment of Ten Hag and that a certain manager on Merseyside could turn the club around quicker.

Owen explained: "Based purely on CV it doesn’t strike me as ‘wow, that’s the next Manchester United manager’. You look at his wins, but it is in the Dutch league and it is being the manager of Ajax.

"I think if you swapped Jurgen Klopp and the Manchester United manager, I think give it two or three years and you’d be seeing similar performances from the Manchester United players that you see from Liverpool players. Bear in mind the thoughts we all had about Liverpool when Klopp took over and some of the players.

"They have all reached a different level and nobody will convince me a lot of these United players aren’t very good players." Ten Hag's first match in charge of the Reds will be against Klopp's men during their pre-season tour.
