Marcus Rashford told how to rediscover Manchester United form in transfer message

Marcus Rashford must 'release the handbrake' to recapture his best form - even if that means leaving Manchester United for a new challenge.

That's according to Sir Alex Ferguson's one-time assistant manager, Rene Meulensteen, who also worked with the England international during his development years. Rashford plundered 30 goals in all competitions for United last season.

However, the 59-cap forward has been unable to replicate that form this campaign, scoring just five goals in 31 games amid question marks over his body language and on-the-pitch attitude while wearing the famous red shirt.

During his latest appearance on radio station talkSPORT, Meulensteen, 59, said: "Everybody needs to be in a good head space. When people are happy - and they are relaxed - then they will perform at their best.

"But if there's something eating away that isn't right, it will have the opposite effect. Ally [McCoist] mentioned it, the body language of Rashford, and that's clear for everybody to see.

"What's going on, I don't know, but it has happened with Manchester United and different players before. The key, if there's anything going on, is to sort it out behind closed doors, face to face and get it out there.

"Make sure your player is in the best possible place to go out and perform."

When asked if he should leave, Meulensteen added: "The only one who could answer that question is Marcus, but I've always rated him very highly because of the potential that he's got.

"I knew him as a young kid and you actually want to see that young kid back in Marcus with the way he played. Nothing was holding him back. He was bright,
