Marcus Rashford can prove Erik ten Hag right at Manchester United after England goal

Marcus Rashford put an end to his goal drought on Tuesday night with an excellent effort in England's 3-1 win over Italy.

Gareth Southgate's side booked their place in next summer's European Championship with a brilliant performance against the current holders, Rashford firing home the second goal of the night in typically clinical fashion. Picking up the ball on the left wing, he cut inside with pace and arrowed a deadly finish past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The 25-year-old has struggled so far this season, failing to score in nine consecutive appearances for club and country before Tuesday. That run coincided with a dismal streak for United, who lost four matches from six, and pressure had been growing on Erik ten Hag to drop last season's top goalscorer.

"Everyone knows the qualities of him," Ten Hag said in defence of Rashford at the start of this month. "But if the team is doing the right things, putting him in the right places and we've seen him coming in the right positions, but he's struggling, it will pass.

"Everyone at Manchester United backs him. The team supports and believes in him. I'm sure with that confidence of the team behind him this will change, it will pass.

"Strikers when they don't score, they need one goal and they step over it. It will come - he is so experienced. He knows when he and the team are doing the right things, the momentum will come and he'll be on fire."

While Tuesday's strike was not in a United shirt, Ten Hag will be encouraged to see Rashford looking sharp and scoring. It was a goal seen many times last
