Manchester United will be reminded of one of their biggest transfer mistakes vs Newcastle

Guimaraes was signed by Newcastle in the January transfer window and has been a key member of the squad ever since. The Tyneside club were able to sign him for a cut price fee of around £38m and his performances have led many United fans to question why the club never made a move for him.

Erik ten Hag had not been appointed in the January transfer window, so United were reluctant to sign any players in case the manager they decided on did not want them. Guimaraes is a complete midfielder; he offers defensive stability, ball progression and also goals. The Brazillian has scored seven goals including an impress backheel volley last season.

He has formed an impressive partnership with fellow Brazillian Joelinton and they will cause United a lot of problems. Both will also be keen to show up Casemiro if he starts, as they look to earn a World Cup starting place in Qatar.

Overall, Guimaraes is yet another example of how United need to start digging deeper with their scouting as the midfielder was reasonably priced and available and yet no one thought to sign him. On
