Manchester United will be reminded of one of their biggest transfer mistakes vs Newcastle

Manchester United will hope that they can make it back-to-back wins in the Premier League against Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon. Eddie Howe's side have been in good form so far this season and currently sit in sixth.

If Newcastle win on Sunday, they will overtake United who are currently one point ahead of them in the table. If the Magpies secure any positive result, then Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes will be crucial.

Guimaraes was signed by Newcastle in the January transfer window and has been a key member of the squad ever since. The Tyneside club were able to sign him for a cut price fee of around £38m and his performances have led many United fans to question why the club never made a move for him.

Erik ten Hag had not been appointed in the January transfer window, so United were reluctant to sign any players in case the manager they decided on did not want them. Other clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham who also needed a midfielder passed on the chance to sign Guimaraes and they are all regretting it now.

Guimaraes is a complete midfielder; he offers defensive stability, ball progression and also goals. The Brazillian has scored seven goals including an impress backheel volley last season.

He has formed an impressive partnership with fellow Brazillian Joelinton and they will cause United a lot of problems. Both will also be keen to show up Casemiro if he starts, as they look to earn a World Cup starting place in Qatar.

Overall, Guimaraes is yet another example of how United need to start digging deeper with their scouting as the midfielder was reasonably priced and available and yet no one thought to sign him. On
