Kieran Tripper explains Newcastle's game plan vs Manchester United

Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier admitted that the Magpies always planned to go toe-to-toe with Manchester United following Sunday's goalless draw at Old Trafford.

Eddie Howe's side, who have lost just one of their first ten Premier League games this season, dominated for long spells in the first half and hit the woodwork twice through Joelinton in a split second. They pressed United high up the pitch and were not afraid to commit bodies forward.

Having evidently taken on board half-time instructions from Erik ten Hag, United had much more belief about themselves after the restart and looked a lot more energised. They enjoyed more of the ball than they had done prior to the break and they looked the more likely to score.

Newcastle, though, with the help of some wasteful United finishing, held on to secure a point, something Trippier felt they were full value for, meaning they are now unbeaten in their last five matches.

"We are delighted from the first game until now because we changed our philosophy in how we want to play," Trippier told Sky Sports. "We want to go for teams and coming to Old Trafford we knew it was going to be difficult.

"We didn't want to sit off them; we wanted to press them and I think it was an entertaining game. To come away from Old Trafford with a draw and a clean sheet, and the chances that we had in the first half as well, yes, we're happy."

United squandered two golden opportunities to take all three points late on through both Fred and Marcus Rashford. The former missed an unguarded goal from close range before Rashford nodded wide from close range.
