Manchester United vs Wigan Athletic date confirmed for FA Cup third round fixture

Manchester United's FA Cup third round clash at Wigan Athletic will take place on Monday, January 8 after being selected for live television broadcast.

Erik ten Hag's side learned of their first opponents in this season's competition on Sunday, drawing the League One outfit who beat York City in the second round earlier this month. The game will take place at Wigan's DW Stadium.

ITV have selected the game for live broadcast in the UK, moving it to the Monday evening slot with an 8.15pm kick-off. It will be United's first trip to Wigan in competitive action for 11 years.

United will hope to go one better than last season, in which they were beaten 2-1 in the final by Manchester City in June. It is the club's first away draw since a defeat at Leicester City in March 2021, a run comprising of 12 consecutive home games in domestic cups.

Wigan are enjoying a strong campaign in League One, sitting 14th despite starting the season with an eight-point deduction following relegation from the Championship. Shaun Maloney's side have lost just once in their last eight and beat Exeter City in the first round before that 1-0 win at York.

United travel to Nottingham Forest the previous weekend and that game has been moved to the Saturday evening kick-off. After their FA Cup tie, Ten Hag's men host Tottenham on the Sunday evening.
