Manchester United unhappy with Chelsea over Mason Mount situation

Manchester United are unhappy with Chelsea as negotiations over a possible transfer of Mason Mount continue.

The United football director John Murtough is understood to have taken a dim view of Chelsea's strategy of communicating United's bids through the club's dedicated correspondents in London.

Chelsea have rejected three offers from United of upfront fees with add-ons worth in the region of £40million, £50m and £55m. Chelsea are holding out for an overall fee of £65m.

Sources say Murtough's "hands are tied" due to United's finances and there is a precise bidding structure to progress with potential deals.

United believe Chelsea are overvaluing Mount, 24, as he is out of contract next year and wants to leave. United's bargaining position is weakened by a tight budget they do not want to compromise amid their intention to sign a striker.

If United opt to walk away from Mount, they have at least four other midfield targets to turn to. Well-placed sources say any addition would be "acceptable" but Mount is manager Erik ten Hag's preferred option.

United finalised a long list of targets per position in April and Ten Hag began holding video calls with players before the season had ended.
