Amid contractual issues, though, he opted to stay put at the Nou Camp for at least another few months. Ten Hag nurtured De Jong during their time together at Ajax and the 25-year-old could be revisited as an option for United moving forward.

United could revive their interest in Benjamin Sesko despite the promising RB Salzburg frontman already completing his next move. United weighed-up a chase for Sesko, 19, during the most-recent window before RB Leipzig signed him on a pre-agreed contract.

Reports from 90min suggest he might not even kick a ball for the Bundesliga side, though, as United and other possible suitors - including Chelsea and Bayern Munich - consider a follow-up bid for his services.
