Manchester United told to be careful what they wish for in David de Gea saga

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke believes the goalkeepers Erik ten Hag could sign are not as good as David de Gea.

MEN Sport reported this week Inter Milan's Andre Onana is the Reds' top target should their current first choice choose to leave the club. De Gea's contract expired on June 30 but the Reds have insisted they are still in negotiations with him.

The Manchester Evening News understands United want to undertake face-to-face negotiations with the Spaniard following his wedding last Saturday. However, senior figures at Old Trafford expressed doubts about De Gea remaining No.1 after his mistakes in the defeats to West Ham, Sevilla and Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

While Yorke sees where United are coming from, he has warned the Reds about behaving disrespectfully to their first choice for more than a decade. Speaking to BoyleSports who offer the latest Premier League odds here, the 51-year-old said: "The David de Gea situation is a bit disrespectful from Man United but they also have the right to do it.

"You never want to end your long career at such a big club, in turmoil. I understand how these football clubs work, but I also sympathise with the player. Man United have to be careful what they wish for.

"You don't win the Golden Glove if you're not a good goalkeeper. I know he's made mistakes and some of them at crucial times, but who doesn't do that? I don't think the goalkeepers that Man United want are anywhere near as good as De Gea, so they need to be careful what they wish for.
