Manchester United takeover latest as David Beckham explains Qatar 'connection' amid Sheikh Jassim claim

After months of radio silence there finally seems to be some movement regarding a takeover of Manchester United - albeit supporters have been in this position before.

It has been close to a year since the Glazers announced plans to 'explore strategic alternatives' for investment last November, essentially paving the way for a buyout of the club. Since then, there has been no communication from the American family and growing frustration among fans and staff.

Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe remain in the running but have seen little progress in recent weeks, with the latter now thought to have altered his proposal in a bid to win over brothers Joel and Avram, who want to remain at the club. Earlier this week, David Beckham joined the growing list of former players calling for change.

Beckham admission

David Beckham says he has a 'long-standing relationship with Qatar' but insists there has been 'no discussion' regarding a potential role for him at Manchester United should Sheikh Jassim complete his takeover of the club.

Recent reports have suggested that Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim would offer Beckham an 'ambassadorial role' at his boyhood club, should he complete his buyout from the Glazer family. The former midfielder is said to be one of several United icons on a list to be offered such posts.

But regarding his return to United, the 48-year-old says no talks have taken place.
