Manchester United still haven’t addressed two critical transfer issues

It is now just a matter of days before the new Premier League season starts and for Manchester United fans there is a real sense of enigma accompanying the new campaign. Erik ten Hag is the man in charge and after a productive pre-season supporters have fresh reason to dream that this time, maybe, just maybe, things really have changed at the club.

The Dutchman’s authoritative approach certainly indicates there will be a much tighter ship in the months ahead, but time will be crucial if he is to succeed, and expectations need to be eased. Not only does it take time to implement new ideas and drill a team into playing the way the manager wants, but it will also take time before he has a squad he is truly happy with.

Ten Hag has had his hands tied somewhat in regards to which players he can get rid of this summer after six players left for free at the end of last season, meaning departures have not been as wholesale as needed.

Then there have also been issues in regards to slow recruitment, one of the main reasons why Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave, with United yet to make a statement summer signing despite three sensible additions.

It shows United’s faith in the new manager that they have backed him to bring in the players he wants this summer but few fans would have demanded a new left-back this summer, despite the excellent potential of Tyrell Malacia.

Lisandro Martinez comes in to bring consistency to a back line that chopped and changed last season and Christian Eriksen is an elite addition to a midfield that lacks creative talent.

However, with just over a month left of the window United’s two biggest issues still aren’t solved.
