Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo told he must retire from football

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has been told that he must retire from football by an Italian legend.

The 37-year-old was United's top goalscorer last season with 18 strikes to his name. However, he missed the vast majority of pre-season due to personal reasons, having stated to the club that he wished to leave if a 'reasonable offer' was submitted for him.

Ronaldo would eventually return but he was left playing catch-up and since then has scored just once for his club and country - a penalty away at Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League. This lack of game time and goals has led to former Real Madrid, Milan and Inter striker Antonio Cassano calling on the forward to retire.

Speaking to Cabine Desportiva, Cassano explained: "At this point, Cristiano should do himself a favour and understand that if you don't reach a certain level, you should close the shop. He won everything, he was a phenomenon.

"Stop. You have to stop or you'll only run into the bench."

Following the international break, Ronaldo has returned to United hoping to start in the centre-forward role in the Manchester derby on Sunday. The Reds travel to City knowing that a win would put them two points behind the Blues with a game in hand over them.
