Manchester United set for transfer budget boost as former academy player completes move

Manchester United's transfer budget will be boosted by Luton Town after they signed Tahith Chong from Birmingham City.

The winger left Old Trafford a year ago on a permanent deal, having been initially loaned to Birmingham the year before. Chong featured during pre-season under Erik ten Hag last summer before being moved on.

After an impressive season in the Championship, Chong will return to Old Trafford next season when Luton visit M16. The Hatters have made him their third summer signing, in a deal reported to be worth an initial £4million.

United sold Chong for £1.45million but crucially inserted a sell-on clause in the deal. MEN Sport reported recently that United will be owed 25 per cent of any fee received for him.

On his arrival at Kenilworth Road, Chong said: “For me, that was the first time I’d experienced that and it’s something that’s stuck with me for a long time. That shows the fans’ respect, and now that I’m here I’m excited to see them and look forward to gaining their trust.

“In the few hours that I’ve been here, I already get the feeling that it really is a family club. I’m a football fan, I’ve watched some games so I’ve seen how they’ve played and it shows togetherness and unity – and you can only have that if you’re a family club.

“I think that’s important because every club faces adversity – it’s not always going to be good – but if you’re a family club you stick through it together and it’s easier as a family.”
