Manchester United scout Tommy Moller Nielsen dies as former club pay tribute

Manchester United scout Tommy Moller Nielsen has passed away at the age of 61, his wife has confirmed.

The tragic news was announced via Danish outlet Fyens Stiftstidende, who further revealed that a cause of death had not been confirmed by the family at the time of writing.

Nielsen had been working as a United scout since 2016 after an extensive career as both a player, manager and coach. He was the son of legendary coach Richard Møller Nielsen, who famously led Denmark to victory in the 1992 European Championship.

He got his breakthrough playing for his dad as part of a successful Odense BK side, and he would go on to become a household name in Denmark as a player.

After retiring, he moved into management, where he had three spells in charge of his former club, B1909, and spent three years as first-team coach of Rangers before becoming the assistant at Aberdeen.

He returned to Denmark with B1909, Viborg and later HB Koge, before moving into his first scouting role with FC Vestsjælland. A year later, he was hired by United to become a first-team senior scout.

A statement from his former club Odense Boldklub wrote: "It is with deep sadness that we have received the message that the former first team player and OB ambassador Tommy Møller Nielsen has passed away. All our thoughts go out to Tommy's family and friends at this difficult time."

He leaves behind two sons and his wife, Lisbeth.
