Manchester United's Kobbie Mainoo needs to copy an AC Milan icon - he reminds me of him so much

Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has suggested Gareth Southgate will take things slowly with Kobbie Mainoo following the youngster's first call-up to the England squad.

Less than a week after being left out of Southgate's plans for the upcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, the Football Association confirmed Mainoo had been selected. He linked up with his new teammates at St George's Park on Tuesday and trained with them for the first time.

The decision to select him for the senior squad arrived less than 48 hours after he produced an excellent showing in United's 4-3 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals at Old Trafford on Sunday. He excelled in midfield, earning a standing ovation as he was substituted with 80 minutes on the clock.

Following that display, questions were asked of Southgate as to why he had overlooked him for the upcoming friendlies. But now that he has been included, a lot of England fans believe he should immediately become a mainstay in the Three Lions' midfield and, as a result, be included in the squad for the European Championship in Germany this summer.

Despite that understandable temptation, Brown believes Southgate will want to see how the 18-year-old gets on during this current international break first.

"I am pretty sure Gareth will be watching him quite a lot in this sort of call-up," Brown told the Manchester Evening News. "What a player he could have.
