Manchester United's biggest January transfer priority has become even more obvious

The way things are playing out, January is going to be very busy for Manchester United.

It shouldn't be. Erik ten Hag has already had the luxury of spending well over £400m in just over a year in charge and that doesn't take into account the further hundreds of millions spent before his arrival. Yet, there remain several weaknesses in a squad that is beginning to revert back to the frail, spineless nature the manager had seemingly cured.

The 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich was a flattering scoreline. United were largely outclassed by a super club that, even though has had its fair share of problems, has invested in the right places on and off the pitch to ensure they remain at an elite quality.

Decades of negligence at Old Trafford have left the club with holes in the roof and holes in the squad. Ten Hag had 12 players unavailable for the trip to Germany and though that sort of injury crisis is a freak occurrence that would rock any side, it's now three humbling defeats in a row and even the wins this season have been flat and uninspiring.

So despite it still being September, United are already desperate for January to roll around. The position that needs the most urgent attention in the transfer window is of course the right flank and it became even more obvious after Wednesday.

There has been a clamour for Facundo Pellistri to get a chance in the side given he's the only right-winger available and he has repeatedly looked bright in brief cameos. But nothing improves a player's quality like not playing. When reality hits, it can often be harsh.
