Manchester United are back in the Champions League this season but expectations among supporters are realistic.

United were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Europa League last season when spectacularly collapsing against Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium and Erik ten Hag's side will simply need to be better this term.

Another performance like that horror show against Sevilla cannot happen again, especially in the Champions League where United will be drawn against the best opposition in Europe if progressing to the knockout rounds.

United began their Champions League campaign with a 4-3 defeat by Bayern Munich in the opening group game and the scoreline flattered the visitors after two late goals from Casemiro at the Allianz Arena.

Casemiro's brace took the attention away from a disappointing individual performance. The defensive midfielder has not been at his best this season and he'll need to deliver in Champions League games if United are to do well.

Bayern Munich didn't need to reach top gear and yet they still scored four goals. They are the second favourites to win the competition after the signing of Harry Kane, but a better showing in Germany from United was expected.

That game provided a reality check about the standard of the top teams in the Champions League and United can't afford not to win their home games against Galatasaray and F.C. Copenhagen if they want to progress.
