Manchester United's Andre Onana showed the type of character he is in Aaron Wan-Bissaka moment

Revolution is rare in football. Managers tend to preach evolution instead, the idea of marginal gains, the slow accumulation of their methods being adapted by the squad session by session, game by game.

But watching Andre Onana make his debut for Manchester United against Real Madrid felt very much like a revolution was occurring before our eyes. It cost them £44million, but the signing of the 27-year-old goalkeeper could be transformative.

His last action came against Manchester City in the Champions League final. Now he is in the red of United. In Istanbul, he produced an eye-catching display with his feet, at a time when United had already approached him, with doubts growing over David de Gea's future.

In Houston's NRG Stadium, Onana looked a much better fit for United under Erik ten Hag than De Gea had ever been. With a delay when Kobbie Mainoo went off injured, we had to wait until the five-minute mark for Onana's first involvement for his new club. Predictably, we didn't need to crane our necks to follow the path of the ball.

With his two central defenders standing on either side of him, Onana rolled a short pass to Raphael Varane, received it back moments later and then fizzed another first-time pass in that direction to Aaron Wan-Bissaka. He found an angle to pass infield and suddenly United were moving, although it broke down when Bruno Fernandes tried to get too extravagant with a flick on the right.
