Manchester United risk ignoring dream transfer midfield if they don't match £148.1m target

It's been a fascinating January transfer window for Manchester United, primarily focused on outgoings rather than incomings.

To the disappointment of many supporters, it's looking unlikely that United will be bringing in anyone new in the winter market and are instead looking at options for the summer.

The MEN understand that United could bring in up to four recruits in the summer transfer window while accepting the midfield is their biggest problem.

Supporters have been crying out for the club to sign a central defensive midfielder because it's a clear issue that needs addressing. Many fans wanted United to buy one this month because it could impact their chances of reaching the top four in the Premier League.

There is an argument to suggest that the correct type of midfielder isn't available at the moment, which is why United may be waiting until the summer when the appropriate fit becomes available.

We also have to consider that United don't have a permanent manager in place at the moment. Waiting until an appointment is made might be a viable solution because it doesn't make sense to sign anybody for a coach who's taking up a new position at the end of the season.

However, I can't entirely agree with these two reasons, particularly the first one.

United have been linked with so many midfielders over the past 12 months, and it remains to be seen who they eventually go for. Still, there's no denying that there were opportunities available in January.

But with the likes of Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice being the big names touted with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, you'd think the club are confident of signing these players. Supporters would love to see these types of players being purchased.
