Serie A-chasing £50m star could solve Pep Guardiola's biggest Man City transfer dilemma

At Manchester City the process of filling up an empty striker department looks to be well underway, with the signing of Julian Alvarez expected to be announced any day now.

City are likely to make a serious effort to sign Erling Haaland or another elite striker in the summer too, although the number nine position may not actually be the biggest transfer concern on the minds of Pep Guardiola and City's director of football Txiki Begiristain.

After nine years of brilliant service in sky blue, 36-year-old club captain Fernandinho is likely to leave the club at the end of the current season.

In letting the Brazilian go, City will be left with Rodri as their only out-and-out holding midfield option. The Spain international has come on leaps and bounds since joining City in 2019, but Guardiola will be keen to bring in cover for him to facilitate rotation and avoid injury.

It's not an easy problem to solve. A number of Premier League clubs are in need of a new holding midfielder, including Manchester United. Rodri's brilliance this season means it is unlikely that any summer recruit would start ahead of him next season, meaning the most sought-after targets will likely favour moves to clubs where they will see more game time.

Any promising youngsters would face a similar issue, plus City have a few of those to fit into the first-team squad already.

Someone like a Sergio Busquets - a player who knows Guardiola's system well and who at 33 would not necessarily complain about playing second fiddle - could work well, but as we have seen when Fernandinho has played this season, having a drop-off in quality from Rodri can be a problem for City.
