Manchester United problem position should have been fixed by £51m double deal - but it's broken again
Which one of Manchester United's three senior goalkeepers will still be at Old Trafford at the start of next season? It is a question that could influence transfer decisions in a key area of the pitch in a window set to be extremely challenging.
It's not been a good week to be in goal for United. Andre Onana proved he couldn't cash the cheques his mouth had written in Lyon, and Altay Bayindir then fluffed another audition to replace him. Tom Heaton sat on the bench at Newcastle and must have wondered what he must do to get another chance in this team.
There is an argument Heaton would be the safest option to start at Old Trafford against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final second leg. By safest, you could also say least likely to make a mistake. The 38-year-old has been short of football in recent years, but in the pressure cooker this week, his experience might make him a more reliable option than Onana or Bayindir.
But nobody seriously expects that to happen. Heaton has been badly underused since returning to the club and it is partly why he is considering retirement when his contract expires this summer. Many supporters might categorise that as no great loss, but Heaton is a vital cog in the dressing room and an experienced member of the leadership group.
If he does hang up the gloves, United could need to sign two or even three goalkeepers this summer, at a time when the transfer budget will barely stretch to one. If Heaton is a valuable non-playing member of this squad, it is down to Onana and Bayindir to perform. Amorim looks to have lost trust in both of them.
He couched his decision to axe the £47million Onana from the squad to face Newcastle at the weekend as a chance to let him "disconnect", but coming on
