Manchester United preparing first bid for Frenkie de Jong and more transfer rumours

Manchester United have reportedly opened direct talks with Barcelona as they weigh up their opening bid for Frenkie de Jong.

The former Ajax midfielder has been identified as an ideal target by United boss Erik ten Hag as he eyes up a reunion with the 25-year-old. As reported by the Manchester Evening News last month, United have contacted Barcelona about De Jong’s potential availability as they weigh up a move.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, they may have now moved closer to making an opening bid. United are claimed to have opened direct talks, with the Catalan club having set a price tag of around €85million.

De Jong is said to still not be convinced of leaving Barcelona, and wants to play Champions League football. The midfielder spoke of his desire to stay at the Nou Camp earlier this week, insisting the La Liga club had not spoken to him about leaving.

Romano though claims United will try to push again, with Barcelona needing to solve their financial issues. A number of players have been linked with moves away from the club this summer as they look to raise funds.

Speaking of Barcelona, the Catalan giants have reportedly taken the lead in the race to sign Ruben Neves. The Wolves midfielder has also been linked with United, as well as Arsenal.

Neves is being heavily touted for a move away from Molineux this summer, having been one of Wolves’ standout players over the past few years. United have been linked with the 25-year-old for some time, particularly after the Portuguese star impressed in Wolves’ 1-0 win at Old Trafford in January.
