His sloppiest half for a while, Lindelof seemed thrown by Brighton's fluid movement. Can't be assured of keeping his place. 4

Still nowhere near his level of last season and that may only return when Raphael Varane returns. Fell for Pascal Gross's dummy. 5

Sergio Reguilon

Started superbly but Brighton exploited his eagerness to go 1-0 up and Reguilon's rustiness was apparent in the second half. 5

Scott McTominay

Occupied an undefined role as United effectively played without a right winger. His limitations were obvious and he offered little. 3

Casemiro

Sprayed the odd fine pass but he was also too slow to react at times and he failed to track Welbeck. 5

Bruno Fernandes

Tried to cover every blade of grass and that was his problem. Tried too hard and ended the first half with a booking. 4

Christian Eriksen

Started well but faded and once Brighton went ahead, Eriksen struggled to have any influence on the game. 5

Marcus Rashford

Had close to 10 shots and his tendency to overdo it literally denied Rasmus Hojlund a full debut goal. His body language was too negative at times. 5

Rasmus Hojlund

Thought he had scored but Rashford had taken the ball over the line. Put himself about and could have connected with Rashford's cross at 0-0. 6
