Manchester United need two signings more than ever after Bayern defeat

It was the same old story again for Manchester United in midweek. They started well, wasted early chances, were punished for individual errors, lost all momentum, and lost once again.

They will be hoping for a response against Burnley this weekend, though it would also be no surprise if those away day woes continued against a side currently winless in the Premier League.

Andre Onana was scapegoated once again for an ignorable error on Wednesday night, which, while valid criticism, also drew focus away from a number of other reoccurring problems.

Erik ten Hag has already given his backing to Onana, whom he hopes will come good after a tricky start to life at his new club, but perhaps the biggest concern should be the midfield mess that has been a constant theme all season.

Even in the two matches United have won so far, their midfield has left a lot to be desired, with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen looking well off the pace in nearly every game they've played.

That was the same again against Bayern, where Eriksen was anonymous in midfield and Casemiro's late double was not enough to divert attention from his lack of defensive protection.

United were done no favours by an ongoing injury crisis that left them light on any viable alternative in midweek, with Scott McTominay justifying his bench role after a poor cameo appearance when he was introduced.

Ten Hag will hope to have reinforcements in place this weekend with Raphael Varane and Mason Mount not risked for the Champions League opener, which in itself tells you how vital three points will be at Turf Moor on Saturday
