Manchester United must learn a lesson from Paul Pogba

If you're a fan of Burns' poetry (or have taken GCSE English in the last decade where you study the John Steinbeck novel that takes its name from the line) you will have likely heard this saying and studied its meaning. But broken down simply it means that even the most careful and thought out plans can often go wrong.

When Manchester United re-signed Paul Pogba; the plan they had in mind was not that thought out and careful. They saw a player that was stealing the headlines and grabbing the world's attention at Juventus and thought 'We have the money and need a midfielder, there's no reason he can't do that for us right?'

'POGBACK' was plastered all over the club's social media and advertising for the upcoming season; his announcement video saw him partnered with Stormzy and the fanbase's excitement was at its highest since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. But the higher the expectations, the further they have to fall.

Unfortunately, there was a reason; that being that United signed the player without thinking about how he fits into the side and where he fits into the current squad. What followed was six years of disappointment punctuated with flashes of pure brilliance but now it has come to an end.

Manchester United have announced in an official statement that Pogba will be leaving the club on a free transfer when his contract expires and the response from the fanbase has been emphatic. Two clear camps have formed; those who think the club failed the Frenchman and others who believe that Pogba failed them.

The answer probably lies somewhere in the middle.
