Manchester United monitoring Premier League duo as Jim Ratcliffe plans recruitment overhaul

Manchester United are continuing to monitor Everton duo Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana.

Branthwaite, 21, and Onana, 22, started in Everton's 2-0 defeat to United at Old Trafford on Saturday and a source confirmed United still like the duo.

Centre half Branthwaite has excelled in his first season in the Premier League, having spent last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven. Branthwaite is in the frame for a possible England squad call-up on Thursday and Gareth Southgate's assistant, Steve Holland, was in the Old Trafford directors' box at the weekend.

Belgium midfielder Onana joined Everton in the summer of 2022 for £33million and is under contract until 2027, as is Branthwaite.

Branthwaite has started in 25 of Everton's league matches this term while Onana has scored two goals in 22 league appearances.

United are primed for another summer of upheaval, with doubts over the futures of several players and reinforcements essential amid their struggles to qualify for the Champions League.

An athletic central defender is wanted as Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans are out of contract in June while Victor Lindelof could be sold. Lisandro Martinez is the only senior United centre back not in his 30s. United also admire Edmond Tapsoba of Bayer Leverkusen.

United are expected to bolster their midfield with at least one younger recruit. Casemiro has generated interest from Saudi Pro League clubs, Christian Eriksen has seldom appeared since the January winter break, Sofyan Amrabat will almost certainly return to Fiorentina once his loan ends and West Ham United bid for Scott McTominay last summer.
