Manchester United miss out on generational talent as Erik ten Hag turns to Mason Mount

Mason Mount has been given a second chance at Manchester United after the club missed out on signing Xavi Simons.

The former Chelsea midfielder, 25, was sidelined for most of the 2023/24 season with a calf injury and struggled to make any sort of impact in Erik ten Hag's team even when he was fit. There were whispers of a summer departure, particularly with United chasing Simons, who plays in a similar position.

But the highly-rated Dutchman, 21, has returned on loan to RB Leipzig from PSG, ending United's interest and giving Mount another opportunity to prove his worth at Old Trafford.

Simons, who impressed at Euro 2024 and netted 25 goals last season in Germany, was being linked with moves to both United and Bayern Munich. However, he cited Leipzig's faith in him as the reason for his return.

"I joined a great team and felt everyone's trust and belief in me," Simons said. "I got everything I wanted from my move to Leipzig. I was able to develop as both a player and a person - RB Leipzig is the perfect place for you to do that."

He added: "On top of that, the club really value me and made it clear over the last few months that they would like to sign me. They highlighted a clear and concise plan for me for the coming season."
