Leon Goretzka's Man United statement, current stance and clear Vincent Kompany decision

Former Manchester United target Leon Goretzka could be back on their radar after being omitted from Bayern Munich's squad.

Bayern kicked off their season with a 4-0 win over Ulm in the DFB-Pokal last Friday, but manager Vincent Kompany excluded the German international from the matchday squad.

The Bayern coach chose not to divulge details about Goretzka's situation, saying: "As a club, we always want to be clear with the players, that is the reality. We do that internally within our family. We don't need to say anything publicly." However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano suggested that it will be communicated to Goretzka that he isn't expected to be a regular starter under Kompany this term, which might prompt him to seek regular playing time elsewhere.

With two years remaining on his contract at Bayern, the 29-year-old is up against stiff competition for a midfield spot from the likes of Joshua Kimmich, Joao Palhinha, Konrad Laimer, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Raphael Guerreiro. Although there's no current reported interest from United in Goretzka, the situation may evolve as the club looks to bolster their midfield options to pair with Kobbie Mainoo.
