Manchester United may have wildcard solution to help Ruben Amorim in first game
Ruben Amorim faces worrying defensive injuries before his first game - but he may have a wildcard solution to help.
The Portuguese manager will ideally be wanting to implement his successful 3-4-3 formation into the Manchester United squad straight away. However, due to a scary list of injuries in his back line, he may have to look at playing a conventional, but untraditional to Amorim, four back.
Victor Lindelof was the latest edition to the injury list when he came off for Sweden before the 30 minute mark with what looked like a leg injury. We await further details. The rest of the list includes Harry Maguire, Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
What is going to be valuable to Amorim are the players who are available which are Matthijs de Ligt, Jonny Evans, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui. Although these players could formulate a back four, that isn't what Amorim wants. However, he could potentially use a wildcard player who could be the solution.
Amad - the 22-year-old winger - has had an okay career at United since his full return in 2023. A handful of goals, including a brace against PAOK in a 2-0 win in the Europa League, have made him an effective player and substitute.
The new United coach has a proven track record of successfully converting players into wing-backs. 17-year-old Geovany Quenda at Sporting CP is a prime example. For these reasons, don't take it as a surprise if Diallo starts at right wing-back. It just might be the cover Amorim needs before more players are fit.
