Manchester United may have to change transfer strategy for next summer signing

Manchester United's American fanbase were at New York's John F Kennedy airport to greet the squad yesterday morning, but those minded to hang around may have got an early look at their new signing.

Andre Onana followed his prospective new teammates on an Aer Lingus flight later that day, having passed his medical at Carrington and agreed personal terms on a five-year deal. He was confirmed as a United player at 7pm UK time, with £47.2million on it's way to Inter Milan's bank account.

The 27-year-old became Erik ten Hag's second major signing of the summer, barring the short-term contract handed to Jonny Evans. A gap in the squad that opened up late following the departure of David De Gea, but one that was filled efficiently.

Ten Hag quickly identified Onana as his prime target to fill the gap between the posts, having worked with him at Ajax. He trusts the Cameroon international on the ball and knows he will present a major upgrade on De Gea.

A strict transfer budget meant United couldn't just send a blank cheque to the San Siro, but talks progressed quickly and all parties were optimistic a deal could be done fairly early. United acted swiftly and Ten Hag got his main man.
