Manchester United have long led the way in America but Wrexham present a new challenge

When Manchester United touch down in New York this month they will probably by the biggest news in the Big Apple.

The Reds broke America some time ago but the club want to ensure they continue to smash it Stateside and cement themselves as the club of choice across the pond. United will be playing to huge crowds in the US across four matches this summer.

The likes of Real Madrid, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund provide the top-level competition with sell-out stadiums expected as American supporters take their chance to watch the team in the flesh. The remaining fixture is against Wrexham, a team with American aspirations of their own.

United have a massive reach in the States and dominate a large portion of the American pie, but Wrexham want a slice. The club's fanbase has exploded in the last couple of years after the Welsh club was taken over by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The documentary charting the club's first season under the American duo was a hit and the on-pitch performances last season, which included a lengthy FA Cup run and promotion to the Football League, has further swelled the supporter base across the Atlantic.

Plenty of US-based Wrexham fans have made the journey to the Racecourse over the past 18 months and the club are increasing their Stateside appeal. They have signed a sponsorship deal with United Airlines while HP have also come on board. The fourth-tier side are attracting big businesses, reflecting the big-business nature of football.
