Manchester United have a simple solution to their Sofyan Amrabat problem

Manchester United thought they had stumbled upon something Pep Guardiola-like when handing Sofyan Amrabat his full debut for the club at left-back. They hadn't.

An impressive showing from the loanee against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup had supporters purring. But the reality is Amrabat isn't the answer to John Stones or Kyle Walker as a hybrid full-back turned midfielder.

The 27-year-old was brutally exposed in their Premier League rematch with Palace and during a rather calamitous reverse to Galatasaray. United really have been beaten up at Old Trafford over these last 10 days.

While their deadline-day signing has been targeted by opposition managers and players, he has not come under that same scrutiny from United match-goers. Rightly so, too, as Amrabat has stood up and done his utmost to try and solve a problem he wasn't brought to the club to solve.

"I told the manager, I will play where you need me, where the team needs me, even as goalkeeper," said Amrabat to Sky Sports following his full debut. "I will play anywhere I can to help the team.

"It was at left-back, but I had a free role and I also played a lot in midfield. Of course, I'm not a left-back, but I tried to give the team extra options. It was okay." You have to admire Amrabat for more than just his honesty.

As he has proven in subsequent games, Amrabat is no left-back and his success in the Carabao Cup tie - where he was able to find pockets of space between the lines - probably said more about opponents Palace and how much they were under-par in the first of two quickfire visits to Old Trafford.
