Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana gives two reasons for defeat against Man City

Andre Onana thinks Manchester United's failure to 'read the game' is a reason for his side's defeat in the Manchester derby, along with conceding a penalty in the first half of the match.

Manchester City took the lead in the 26th minute of the derby thanks to Erling Haaland's penalty and the away side doubled their lead shortly after play resumed for the second half.

Haaland was left unmarked at the back post by United's defenders for that goal and the striker nodded home for a simple finish.

Onana made a string of decent saves during the match, but he was helpless for Phil Foden's goal with 10 minutes to play, which made sure of the result and a fifth defeat in 10 Premier League matches for United this season.

United have regressed in this campaign and Onana spoke after the final whistle to give his thoughts on the performance.

He told BBC Match of the Day: "It is not how we want. We played a very good opponent and unfortunately, we didn't read the game.

"As Manchester United, we try to be ready every game but there were some key moments - like the penalty. I'm not the one to decide [the penalty] and we have to accept the decision of the referee.

"The first goal was a key moment and from there on we looked down."

United play Newcastle next in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday at Old Trafford in a repeat of last season's final which the Reds won 2-0 thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Casemiro.
