Manchester United gave Martin Dubravka 'weird' gift after defeating Newcastle in Carabao Cup final

Manchester United gave Martin Dubravka a Carabao Cup winner's medal after he returned to Newcastle last season, something which he described as a 'strange situation that I didn’t want to be in'.

Last summer, Dubravka joined United on a season-long loan after losing his status as Newcastle's first-choice goalkeeper and he was expected to play in Europa League fixtures and domestic cup matches.

However, David de Gea was preferred in Europe and Dubravka made just two appearances before being recalled in January.

Dubravka played in the early rounds of the Carabao Cup for United against Aston Villa and Burnley, which meant he was unavailable to play for Newcastle in the competition when he returned from his loan.

Newcastle reached the final of the Carabao Cup and they were defeated 2-0 by United at Wembley. Pope was suspended for that game and Dubravka would have started if for not being cup-tied.

But in a strange turn of events, Dubravka was still given a winner's mental because of his appearances for United. "I got a medal. I didn't really expect it because I didn't know if they would give it to me," he told The Mirror.

"It was [weird] but if you think about it, it's part of the game. I played two matches for them and how many matches was it to get to the final so it was a strange situation to be in, I didn't want to be in it.
