Manchester United fans told how Erik ten Hag's appointment will affect Cristiano Ronaldo

Erik ten Hag's appointment at Manchester United is good news for Cristiano Ronaldo.

That's according to Willem Janssen, who played under Ten Hag at Utrecht for two tears. It was announced Thursday that Ten Hag had been appointed as United's next manager and the Dutchman has signed a three-year contract with the option of another year.

Ten Hag will be facing the biggest challenge of his career when taking over the reins at Old Trafford. After signing Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo, United were expected to contend for the Premier League title, but they have endured an utterly miserable season instead. United have equalled their worst trophy drought for 40 years this term.

Ten Hag has the task of turning the club's fortunes around and that certainly won't be straightforward. Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has suggested up to 10 new players could be signed and there is recognition a major rebuild is required.

Ronaldo's future is surrounded by uncertainty, but Janssen has explained why Ten Hag's arrival would be good for the 37-year-old.

Ten Hag's former player explained the newly appointed United boss is open to compromise to achieve success.

"Erik has certain basic ideas about football but also looks at the players at his disposal," Janssen told The Guardian.

"He played differently with us than with Ajax, where there is more attacking class. He is not the romantic that we like in the Netherlands; he wants to win.

"The season before he arrived we finished 11th but Utrecht want to be in the top five – and that is where we ended his first campaign. His great class is that he knows exactly how he wants it,
