Manchester United fans react as potential backroom appointment emerges

Manchester United are currently undergoing a massive overhaul of their club's backroom under the leadership of Richard Arnold, who has decided to delegate more responsibility to 'footballing people'. John Murtough has been the driving force for much of this change which has already seen a number of high-profile staff members leave Old Trafford.

Matt Judge has left United after 10 years at the club, while United's recruitment also seems to have been overhauled with the exits of chief scout Jim Lawlor and head of global recruitment Marcel Bout. Reports on Sunday claimed the club is looking to appoint a deputy director of football to assist Murtough with the running of the club.

Paul Mitchell is a name long-linked with Old Trafford, and a popular target among fans after success at the likes of Southampton, Tottenham, RB Leipzig and most recently AS Monaco. His personal ties with Ralf Rangnick and the much-needed large-scale rebuild on the pitch made Mitchell appear a perfect match.

According to The Telegraph, however, Murtough has someone else in mind. Andy O'Boyle is the current head of elite development with the FA and the report says that United have approached him for the role.

O'Boyle's role at the FA sees him focus on implementing 'England DNA' at all levels of the men's and women's games to try and create a national team that is able to compete for trophies on the biggest stage. Given that England has reached the semi-final of a World Cup and the final of the European Championships while O'Boyle has been in this position, he must be doing his job correctly.

The fans made their thoughts known on social media.
