In this warped world of the transfer market, if Manchester United want to obtain a fee for Brandon Williams they will have to extend his contract.

United could only negotiate a season-long loan with Ipswich Town for Williams, who has played 10 minutes for the club in the last two years.

Williams was injured for five months last season but he has appeared over 50 times for United and played frequently on loan at Norwich City in the Premier League.

Selling players remains problematic for United. Anthony Elanga was sold for a reasonable fee of £15million, his price driven up by Nottingham Forest muscling in after Everton's move. €15m for Fred was decent and €9m for Matej Kovar impressive.

United have confirmed that Luke Shaw is out for 'a number of weeks' with an unspecified muscle injury.

The England left-back has started both of United's Premier League matches this season. Shaw has been a mainstay in the team at left-back under Erik ten Hag.

United say Shaw will miss an extended period with a muscle problem and haven't put a timescale on his return. He will miss Saturday's match against Nottingham Forest and is now a doubt for England's European Qualifiers next month.

A statement from United said: "Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has sustained an injury which will rule him out of forthcoming games."
