Marc Cucurella vs Sergio Reguilon - stats give Erik ten Hag a transfer decision amid Manchester United interest

Manchester United have done some good work in the transfer window but enter thee final days in a scramble.

Erik ten Hag spent more than £163million filling the three major gaps in his squad across goalkeeper, midfielder and up front. But a series of unfortunate circumstances has opened up another hole at left-back.

United confirmed after the 2-0 defeat at Tottenham that Luke Shaw would be out for 'a number of weeks' with a muscular issue, but there are fears the prognosis could extend to two months. Tyrell Malacia is yet to feature this season and Brandon Williams joined Ipswich on loan, leaving Alvaro Fernandez - who is yet to feature in competitive action for the first-team - as the sole natural option.

As such, United are looking to enter the market this week for a short-term fix. Barcelona's Marcos Alonso was a fleeting link but Marc Cucurella and Sergio Reguilon are of genuine interest.

The pair are out of favour at Chelsea and Tottenham respectively and while neither are ideal options, this is the kind of pond United are fishing in with just five days left until the deadline. Both have struggled in recent seasons but earned their big moves for a reason.

Reguilon spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid and managed just two starts, too small a sample size to get a clear view of the 26-year-old's quality. But he racked up 22 starts from 25 appearances across all competitions for Spurs during the 2021/2022 campaign.

Those appearances yielded two goals and three assists for Jose Mourinho's - and later Ryan Mason's - side. That is more than the one assist and one goal Cucurella managed in 35 starts for Brighton during that same season.
