Manchester United face new Manuel Ugarte transfer challenge amid Berge and McTominay development

Fulham are not expected to make another bid for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay if they sign Sander Berge from Burnley.

Burnley have accepted an offer of £25million from Fulham for Berge, who also generated interest from United this summer.

The Norway international was shortlisted as a fall-back option with Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte still United’s priority target.

United held discussions with Burnley about Berge earlier this month and it is understood they expressed confidence in concluding a deal for Ugarte.

The prospective signing of Ugarte, 23, is understood to be contingent on the departure of McTominay, the subject of failed bids from Fulham. Fulham’s last offer for McTominay was £23m.

McTominay, 27, has entered the final year of his contract and although United have the option of an additional year his resale value is unlikely to be higher in 12 months’ time.

United valued McTominay at £40m last year when they rejected a bid of £30m from West Ham United.

United already have five out-and-out central midfielders and need to sell one to trigger the mooted arrival of Ugarte.
