Sir Alex Ferguson liked me – I could’ve joined Man United if not for Ryan Giggs

Blackburn Rovers icon Morten Gamst Pedersen could have been a Manchester United player – had it not been for the evergreen Ryan Giggs.

The former Norway international left a lasting impression during his more than eight years in English football, exclusively spent at Ewood Park. He was known for netting spectacular goals and quickly won the hearts of fans nationwide.

Though it wasn't just the supporters who took notice; Sir Alex Ferguson, 82, was similarly captivated by Pedersen's talent and mulled over a move for the midfielder on several occasions. According to Pederson, who turned 43 on Sunday (September 8), the reason he didn't join United was a mix of bad timing and Giggs' seemingly ageless legs.

"There were loads of rumours [about Man United wanting to sign me] and everything," he told Sport Bible. "I know they were following me during my time at Tromso and in my best times at Blackburn as well. I know there was some interest. They were watching me from the stands.

"How close [was I to joining]? I don't know. It could have happened if Giggs hadn't played for 200 more years... who knows!"

Ferguson himself confirmed his high opinion of the talented midfielder back in 2006, though hinted that signing him wasn't necessary because United already had ample talent in that department. "He seems to be making his reputation against us," the legendary Scot told reporters.
