Manchester United face new fitness concern as Erik ten Hag prepares to issue update on 10 players

Manchester United are sweating on the fitness of Manuel Ugarte after the midfielder came off with what looked like an injury during Uruguay's goalless draw with Ecuador.

Ugarte left the pitch after 82 minutes and was accompanied by a member of Uruguay's medical staff. United will now run the rule over the £42m summer signing when he returns to Carrington.

He is expected to fly back to Manchester today and will likely return to Carrington on Thursday. He was the last player back from international duty in the September break.

The sight of the 23-year-old limping off the pitch in Montevideo is the latest fitness concern for Erik ten Hag as he assesses the state of his squad ahead of Saturday's return to domestic action against Brentford.

Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho withdrew from international duty with what were cited as minor issues. Both started in the goalless draw with Aston Villa before the break. Amad then returned to Manchester after pulling out of the Ivory Coast squad through illness.

Ten Hag is set to face the media later this week for his pre-Brentford press conference when he will give a fitness update on Ugarte, Mainoo, Garnacho and Amad.

The injury problems that blighted last season are threatening to return, with left-backs Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw still absent while Harry Maguire has joined Leny Yoro as centre-backs unavailable after he came off against Villa with a foot injury.

Noussair Mazraoui is also set to miss a couple of weeks of action after undergoing a corrective procedure last week after suffering from heart palpitations.
