Manchester United explain Steve McClaren departure

Steve McClaren will continue to oversee the return of Manchester United players from international duty before he leaves to take over as coach of the Jamaica national team.

The Jamaican Football Federation announced McClaren's appointment on Wednesday evening and United officially acknowledged the first team coach's departure just over two hours later.

McClaren, 63, did not travel on United's pre-season tour of the United States after he had a foot operation and he is working with players due back for training at their Carrington complex.

All three of manager Erik ten Hag's coaching hires in his first summer - McClaren, Mitchell van der Gaag and Benni McCarthy - will have left United by the start of the new season.

“I want to thank Steve for his tremendous service over the past two years," Ten Hag said. "He has been an invaluable source of support and advice to me since I arrived in English football, helping us achieve two trophies while laying down foundations for further success.

“Steve and I have been friends for 16 years since we first worked together at FC Twente and that relationship will continue as he embarks on this next challenge, as will his bond with Manchester United. All of us at the club wish Steve the best of luck in his new role.”

McClaren added: “I wish to say a huge thank you to everyone at Manchester United for their friendship, help and support during the past two years.
