Manchester United could come to regret Anthony Elanga transfer decision

Anthony Elanga looks set to depart Manchester United this summer - but it may not be the best decision for the club.

The young Sweden international only has eight goal contributions at Manchester United, but he has scored some important goals including one in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid. He may be missed on the red side of Manchester should he leave, but there is some frustration that Elanga hasn’t quite shown the promise that he had in United’s academy.

He was top scorer for the U21s in the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season, for example, but his three seasons and more than 50 appearances for United cast some doubt over whether he can replicate that level in senior football. Those doubts come despite some impressive performances that include three goals for his country in the past calendar year.

The 21-year-old has already been at Old Trafford for nine years, and may be looking for a change of scenery, but can United afford to let him go? In the forward positions that Elanga operates in, Erik ten Hag is not short of options.

Jadon Sancho could be competing with Alejandro Garnacho out wide on the left this season, but despite some struggles so far, both of them are young and it’s not a stretch to imagine them having a breakout season in the Premier League this time around.
