Erik ten Hag has not fixed Manchester United problem that Ralf Rangnick identified nearly two years ago

Erik ten Hag will have taken several concerns into the new week following Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Tottenham, not least a continued wastefulness in front of goal.

Manchester United were completely outplayed in the second half at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and deserved nothing from the game. But things could have been very different, had one of several brilliant chances been taken before half-time.

Bruno Fernandes was the biggest culprit, somehow seeing a free header from six-yards cannon high and wide. The Reds captain explained he was focusing on Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario as Luke Shaw's ball floated towards him, leading to the wayward effort.

But Fernandes was not the only one to blame. Marcus Rashford saw an early effort saved by Vicario before heading a good chance over, while Antony hit the post with a strike that really should have rippled the net. Alejandro Garnacho carved out a nice opening but his effort was weak.

United also regularly failed to find the right final ball, with Garnacho and Antony particularly frustrating in that sense. Ten Hag's side have created 32 chances in their opening two games - bettered only by Brighton's 38 - and have had to rely on Raphael Varane for their only goal.

A lack of efficiency in front of goal has been a consistent problem for Ten Hag, with United's 58 in the Premier League last season the lowest in the top six. It was an issue the Dutchman inherited when he arrived last summer and one his predecessor, Ralf Rangnick, had already identified.
