Manchester United confirm Andre Onana squad number

Manchester United have confirmed that new signing Andre Onana will wear the No.24 shirt.

Onana has signed a five-year deal, following the agreement of a £47.72million fee with the Italian outfit. The 27-year-old flew out to the United States earlier on Thursday and will join up with his new teammates as soon as possible.

Speaking after his move was announced, the Cameroon international spoke of his excitement at the 'start of a new journey' and admitted he was exited to reunite with Erik ten Hag, who he played under at Ajax.

Onana had his pick of several options for his shirt, with the No.1 available following the departure of David De Gea earlier this month. It would have been the obvious choice for a first-choice goalkeeper.

However the shot-stopper has decided to keep the No.24 shirt he wore at both Inter Milan and Ajax. That number has been looking for a new owner since Timothy Fosu-Mensah's departure in 2021.

He picked that number after arriving at Inter as a free agent last summer, with previous first-choice Samir Handanović having kept the No.1 shirt.

At Ajax, Onana wore the No.1 shirt for one season in 2017/2018 before moving on to the No.24. It is not known why he gravitates towards that number.

The new signing could enjoy his first outing in the United goalkeeper shirt on Saturday, with Erik ten Hag's men taking on Arsenal in New Jersey.
