Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes responds to Wigan Athletic win amid penalty row

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has issued a blunt response on social media following the FA Cup victory against Wigan Athletic on Monday.

Erik ten Hag's side booked their spot in the fourth round of the competition with a 2-0 win at the DW Stadium, thanks to goals from Portuguese duo Diogo Dalot and Fernandes. The United defender opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a well-placed effort into the bottom right corner before the Red Devils captain doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 74th minute.

It was a game that once again saw controversy due to refereeing decisions, with no VAR in use on this occasion due to the game being held at a stadium outside the Premier League, after United were awarded the penalty that Fernandes would eventually go on to score.

With the score-line sat at 1-0 and United pushing for their second, Fernandes received the ball in the Wigan penalty area before faking to shoot and cutting inside on to his left-foot. While doing so, the Portuguese playmaker was clipped on his foot by the sliding challenge of Liam Shaw, who was attempting to close the angle on Fernandes with the United man in a dangerous position.

Referee Anthony Taylor would go on to award a penalty to United, after deciding there was sufficient contact during the challenge to award a spot-kick. It is a decision that has since sparked controversy across the footballing world, with former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy also making his feelings clear on the incident.
