Roy Keane has addressed growing conversation around Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes

Roy Keane was one of the most talented midfielders of his generation, so he's usually worth listening to when he speaks about a player in his former position.

Keane has built a career in punditry for his no-nonsense approach, which often has comedic value, but he wasn't laughing when recently discussing Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes has faced accusations of sprinting around in an attempt to show he cares when the chips are down, although that effort is usually counter-productive.

There is also a growing conversation about his role in midfield as the No.10 and whether he should be given a licence to have a free role when there are problems in the centre.

"If you watch him at international level, he does the same thing [floating around],” Keane told the Stick to Football podcast.

"It can't all be the coaches and managers. There's a player out there and if he's doing all that stuff and still producing magic, you almost forgive him. But if you're in a struggling team and you’re doing all that stuff, that’s where it stands out.

"And you go 'you're killing us, you’re costing us'. I reckon if you look back at his career, he’s done it in every team. It’s a trait. It’s not as if he’s an inexperienced player - leopards and spots. He’d get away with it if United were winning more matches and he was producing his bits of magic, which he's done before."

Keane added: “United are missing something. A bit of belief, confidence, chopping and changing while lacking goals. It doesn't matter what team you’re playing for, you end up in no man’s land.
